What Does a Spiti Valley Tour Package Include?
A well-built package covers a private vehicle with an experienced mountain driver, hotel and homestay nights, a local guide, and the paperwork for restricted areas. The roads are narrow, fuel and cash are scarce, and weather can close a pass at short notice, so most UK visitors find a guided, private-vehicle trip far less stressful than self-driving.
Spiti suits travellers who enjoy long scenic drives, monasteries, village walks and big skies more than resort comfort. Facilities are simple, and that is part of the appeal. Our packages are tailor-made, so you can add a trek, a night under canvas at Chandratal or extra days in Kinnaur.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley from the UK?
For the complete loop, travel between mid-June and mid-October. Kunzum Pass, the high link between Spiti and the Manali side, is the bottleneck: the Manali–Kaza road typically opens between mid-May and early June, depending on snow clearance, and closes again by mid to late October.
Spiti sits in a rain shadow, so July and August stay far drier than the rest of Himachal, though landslides on the approach roads can cause delays. UK school holidays fall in that window, so book early. September offers clear skies and golden light, and is a favourite with photographers. Outside the season, the Shimla side stays open, but it becomes an out-and-back trip with no Chandratal.
Sample 10-Day Spiti Valley Itinerary for UK Travellers
This route climbs gradually via Kinnaur and leaves the highest night, Chandratal, until you have had several days to adjust. Flights from London to Delhi take around nine hours on direct services, so allow a day to recover.
Days 1–2: Delhi to Shimla
Arrive in Delhi and rest. On Day 2, drive or take a short flight north to Shimla (about 2,200m), the former British summer capital. Colonial architecture and the Ridge make an easy first evening.
Day 3: Shimla to Sangla Valley
Follow the Hindustan–Tibet Highway into Kinnaur. Apple orchards, deep gorges and the first snow peaks appear. Overnight in the Sangla area at around 2,700m.
Day 4: Sangla to Kalpa
Visit Chitkul if time allows, then continue to Kalpa (about 2,960m) for views of Kinner Kailash. Foreign nationals collect the permit near Reckong Peo.
Day 5: Kalpa to Nako and Tabo
Cross into Spiti via Sumdo. Stop at Nako, a lakeside village at roughly 3,600m, then descend to Tabo (about 3,050m) for the night. Sleeping lower than your daytime high is a sound habit.
Day 6: Tabo, Dhankar and Kaza
Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 AD, is known as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" for its ancient murals. Continue to the cliffside fortress monastery at Dhankar and on to Kaza (about 3,800m). This is the biggest overnight gain of the trip, so keep the afternoon easy.
Day 7: Key, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim and Komic
Explore the high villages around Kaza and return to the same bed each night. Hikkim's post office is billed as the world's highest, so post a card home to the UK.
Day 8: Kaza to Chandratal
Cross Kunzum Pass (over 4,500m) and reach Chandratal, the "Lake of the Moon", at around 4,250m. A tented night here is a highlight, but it is also the highest sleep of the trip.
Day 9: Chandratal to Manali
A long, rough drive through Batal and the Atal Tunnel brings you down to Manali (about 2,050m). Expect 9 to 12 hours depending on road conditions and stops.
Day 10: Manali to Delhi
Fly from Bhuntar or take the road south for your onward flight to the UK. We recommend adding a buffer night in Delhi before an international departure, because mountain roads do not run to a timetable.
Key Sites to See in Spiti Valley
- Key (Ki) Monastery, 4,166m: the largest monastery in Spiti, founded in the 11th century and still home to resident monks. It is about 14km from Kaza.
- Kibber and Chicham Bridge: Kibber sits at around 4,200m and is among the highest villages reached by road. Nearby Chicham Bridge spans a deep canyon.
- Langza, Hikkim and Komic: Langza, at about 4,400m, is known for marine fossils in the rock, a reminder that this land was once seabed.
- Tabo and Dhankar: two of the valley's oldest religious sites, with Tabo's murals and Dhankar's dramatic cliff setting.
- Pin Valley: a greener side valley and national park. Add it as a day trip if you have a spare day.
- Chandratal: a crescent-shaped lake at roughly 4,250m, reachable only in the open season.
Altitude Advice for UK Travellers
Most UK visitors live close to sea level, and Spiti is among the higher places you can reach by road. Kaza is around 3,800m and several excursions top 4,000m. Altitude illness can affect anyone, including fit people, so plan for it rather than hoping to avoid it.
Climb slowly and sleep low
Sleeping altitude matters more than the height you reach in the day. The US CDC's Yellow Book says that above 3,000m the sleeping height should rise by no more than about 500m per night, and the Wilderness Medical Society also advises against ascending to a sleeping altitude of 2,750m or higher in a single day (CDC Yellow Book 2026). The Kinnaur route is built to respect that as far as the geography allows, though the step from Tabo to Kaza is bigger than ideal. That is why Day 7 is deliberately light.
Know the symptoms
Headache, nausea, poor appetite, dizziness and disturbed sleep are the usual early signs of acute mountain sickness. Rest, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. If symptoms persist, do not go higher; if they worsen or you become breathless at rest or confused, descend and seek help. The UK's TravelHealthPro altitude illness page sets out what to look for.
Speak to your GP or travel clinic
Do this at least six to eight weeks before departure, especially if you have a heart or lung condition, are pregnant or have had altitude illness before. Some travellers are prescribed acetazolamide, but it is a medicine to discuss with a clinician and not a substitute for gradual ascent.
Practical Tips for UK Visitors to Spiti Valley Tours
- Visa and permits: check the latest requirements on the FCDO India travel advice page. Foreign nationals also need a protected area permit for the Jangi–Sumdo stretch on the Kinnaur route, issued in person at government offices such as Reckong Peo. Carry passport and visa copies and passport photos.
- Insurance: confirm your policy covers trekking-level altitude (up to about 4,500m) and emergency evacuation. Many standard policies cap at lower heights.
- Money: ATMs are few and can be offline, so carry enough rupees for the Spiti leg.
- Connectivity: mobile signal is patchy. Download maps and tell family to expect gaps.
- Packing: layers, a warm hat, sun protection (UV is intense), sturdy shoes, a water bottle and a basic first-aid kit. Nights are cold even in summer.
- Etiquette: dress modestly at monasteries, walk clockwise around stupas and ask before photographing monks.
- Stays: expect simple hotels, homestays and tents. Hot water can be limited, and a sense of humour helps.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How many days do I need for a Spiti Valley tour?
Nine to ten days from Delhi is a comfortable minimum for the Kinnaur and Spiti loop. Shorter itineraries rush the altitude and leave little room for weather delays.
2.Is Spiti Valley suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes, with a guided tour. The trip is demanding because of the roads and altitude, but a private driver and local guide remove most of the stress.
3.Can I visit Spiti Valley in winter?
The Manali route over Kunzum Pass closes, so Chandratal is off the table. The Kinnaur side remains the only road access, as an out-and-back trip.
4.Do I need a permit as a UK citizen?
Yes, a protected area permit is required for the restricted stretch between Jangi and Sumdo. We arrange the paperwork for our guests.
